Dolby Atmos Speaker Layouts Explained: 5.1.2, 7.1.4 and Beyond

What do 5.1.2 and 7.1.4 mean? Learn the Dolby Atmos speaker layouts, height speaker options and how many receiver channels you need.

Dolby Atmos adds height to surround sound, so a helicopter can fly over your head instead of just around you. To hear it, you need speakers above or angled toward the ceiling, and a receiver that can power them. This guide explains the numbers and helps you pick a layout for your room.

How to read the numbers

A layout such as 5.1.2 means:

  • 5 ear-level speakers (front left, center, front right, surround left, surround right)
  • 1 subwoofer
  • 2 height speakers

Common layouts

LayoutSpeakersBest for
5.1.25 ear-level, 1 sub, 2 heightMost living rooms, the best entry into Atmos
5.1.45 ear-level, 1 sub, 4 heightSmaller rooms that want a full overhead effect
7.1.27 ear-level, 1 sub, 2 heightLarger rooms with space behind the seats
7.1.47 ear-level, 1 sub, 4 heightDedicated home theaters

Height speaker options

  • In-ceiling speakers: the best effect, but they require installation.
  • Atmos-enabled (up-firing) speakers: sit on top of your front or surround speakers and bounce sound off the ceiling. Works best with flat ceilings around 8 to 12 feet.
  • Wall-mounted height speakers: mounted high on the front or side walls.

How many channels does your receiver need?

Add up the main and height speakers. A 5.1.2 layout needs 7 powered channels; 5.1.4 and 7.1.2 need 9. The Denon AVR-X3800H is a 9.4-channel receiver, so it can run 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 on its own, and its four subwoofer outputs help smooth bass across the room.

Setup tips

  1. Place ear-level speakers at roughly ear height when seated.
  2. Aim front height speakers slightly in front of the listening position.
  3. Run the receiver’s room correction after every speaker change.
  4. Use a quality subwoofer, or two, for smoother bass.
